Amazon is offering a nice discount on iLife ‘08 and iWork ‘08 for Macintosh. This is the best price I’ve seen on them, and Amazon ships them for free.

I recently decided that I was going to switch from Microsoft Office to iWork. With Apple’s new “Numbers” spreadsheet, iWork does everything I need from Office, while retaining a great deal of Office compatibility. The iLife applications have a very useful import feature which generally does a very good conversion from Microsoft’s document formats, and advises you of any problems that were encountered.

If you have a particularly complicated spreadsheet then Numbers may not do it for you. There are many, many Excel functions that Numbers doesn’t support yet, and none of Apple’s iWork applications will successfully import any Visual Basic that’s part of Office documents. But then again, Microsoft’s own upcoming Macintosh Office 2008 won’t either.

If you’re interested in iWork ‘08 but unsure about it, I’d highly recommend trying Apple’s trial version of it. If you have a recently purchased Macintosh, the trial version may already be available on it. Or you can download the trial version from Apple. Try importing your most important Microsoft Office documents into it and see how it goes.

Note that if you have a recently purchased Macintosh, you probably already have iLife ‘08.

Amazon is offering iWork ‘08 and iLife ‘08 for $14 off their regular prices, the family pack version of iWork ‘08 $19 off and the family pack version of iLife ‘08 for $9 off their regular prices. The family pack is a great deal if you’re looking to legally license iLife ‘08 or iWork ‘08 on 2 to 5 computers. I’m not sure how long Amazon will be offering iWork ‘08 and iLife ‘08 at this discount.
