End of an Era

Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law

A week and a half ago I had the sad pleasure of enjoying the end of a long-running series that has entertained me for years. Yes, it was the end of Har… what’s that you say? Harry Potter?? No, no - Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law! No mention on CNN. No midnight lines at Borders. No parties with little kids dressed up wearing fake wings.

“The Death of Harvey” (available on iTunes) wraps it all up, with Harvey having to retry all the cases he’s tried over the course of his three seasons as an attorney at law, with X The Exterminator seeking Harvey’s crest for the final time, with the return of the Incredible Pottamus and that thing - that thing I sent you - and even the return of Stephen Colbert. The only thing lacking was Reducto.

Over the years, Harvey Birdman has shed new light on cartoon legends like Fred Flinstone, BooBoo Bear and Johnny Quest as Harvey (voiced by Gary Cole) was called to defend them. Harvey was rescued from Hanna-Barbera obscurity by “Space Ghost Coast to Coast”, which brought back Space Ghost as a talk show host (Harvey unfortunately wasn’t voiced by Gary Cole in “Space Ghost Coast to Coast”). Harvey got the Space Ghost treatment later, practicing law at Sebben & Sebben, run by madman Phil Ken Sebben.

The show originally hit Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” with “Sealab 2021″ and “Aqua Teen Hunger Force”, and while they were all in their prime it was a mighty block of programming. Eventually the block crumbled and now they’re all off the air, leaving “The Venture Brothers” the only Adult Swim show that we still watch.

“Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Vol. 1″, “Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Vol. 2″ and “Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Vol. 3″ are all available now at Amazon. They’re all available on iTunes, as well.
