Lemon Olive-Oil Rosemary Cake

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

This is a lovely, light, tasty unusual cake that’s great with tea. Sometime I’m going to try making it substituting honey for part of the sugar… I think that would be even more tasty. The recipe is based on one from Epicurious, with a few changes.

Stanislaw Lem Has Died

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Polish science fiction writer Stanislaw Lem has apparently died at age 84.

You most likely know Lem from Solaris (hate the new cover!)… he has a long history of writing literary, intellectual science fiction and strange conflict with the US science fiction community (and particularly Philip K. Dick).

Maybe Logic - Robert Anton Wilson

Robert Anton Wilson, o-author of "new">The Illuminatus! Trilogy, former editor for Playboy, lecturer, philosopher, maybe-mystic, model advocate, Korzybski-quoter…

Maybe Logic brought a bit of a tear to my eye. I’ve been fond of Robert Anton Wilson for many years; I haven’t seen much material from him in the last few years. His “Historical Illuminatus! Chronicles” seems to have put several publishers out of business, and I despair of ever seeing the final book. I’ve wondered what’s been up with him… he’s getting older (he’s 74 years old now); his wife Arlen passed away in 1999. I’ve often lovingly and respectfully referred to him as a “dumpy old crackpot”. He’s looking older, crackpot-ier, but less dumpy. He’s also spending most of his time in a wheelchair.

Isaac Hayes Quits ‘South Park’

A few months back, South Park ran a very funny episode skewering the Church of Scientology - ending with it daring them to sue. Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef, happens to be a Scientologist. We were wondering at the time how he’d react to the episode… unfortunately, he seems to have decided to leave the show as a result. His statement is that he’s leaving because of the show’s disrespectful attitude toward religions; the South Park guys counter by pointing out that Hayes only had this reaction after they mocked Scientology… the latest in a long line of religious satire.

802.11a on the MacBook Pro

Saturday, March 11th, 2006

There was some speculation when the MacBook Pro was announced that it might support IEEE 802.11a wireless networking in addition to the traditional 802.11b/g networking. 802.11a provides the same speeds as 802.11g, but in a different chunk of frequency spectrum. This is very helpful when you’re around other devices that may be trying to use the same frequencies as 802.11b/g (which is pretty common).

Since then, I haven’t seen any confirmation or denial of it working… so I tested it with an 802.11a access point I’m selling on eBay, and it does indeed work well. I wonder if Apple will update the Airport Express or Airport Extreme base stations to support 802.11a. I’m guessing not; I don’t really expect an update from them until they decide to support 802.11n. I wonder what they’ll call it… Airport Ultra?
